Ah'Tic Lodge #139
Chartered to Bucktail Council #509, Dubois, PA
In the spring of 1937, the leaders of the Bucktail Council wanted to
recognize those
Scouts and Scouters who were truly "Honor Campers" and did so by
organizing a
camp honor society called "The CMR" or Camp Mountain Run Society. The
possibilities of organizing an Order of the Arrow lodge was also being
considered for
the summer of 1937, but time constraints prohibited it.
Discussion continued during the winter of 1937, and on January 12, 1938,
the
Executive Board of the Bucktail Council voted to apply for an Order of the
Arrow lodge
charter. Under the direction of Scout Executive J. H. Keller, plans were
made to form
a lodge using the original membership of the CMR Honor Society as charter
members
for the new lodge.
On June 1, 1938, a ceremonial team from Anicus Lodge #67, Camp Twin Echo,
East
Boroughs Council came to Camp Mountain Run and initiated the first group
into the
Order of the Arrow who then became the ceremonial team. This newly formed
team
proceeded through the summer camping period to induct the remainder of the
charter
members. The total number of charter members was 45.
At the first official lodge meeting on July 27, 1938, the name Ah'Tic was
chosen for
the lodge name, taken from the Chippewa language and meaning "Standing
Elk." The
first lodge patch was shield shaped, with the elk head embroidered in the
center. Over
the years, the patch has changed shapes to the triangle, then to the
pocket flap type,
and has varied in colors.
Throughout the rich history of the Ah'Tic Lodge, one aspect that all of
its members
have shared is pride in Camp Mountain Run. |
